Emily Brooks Benefits from All-encompassing Internship at Syracuse Hancock International Airport

Internships are an important part of a Cazenovia College student's educational experience. Emily Brooks, a senior in the Business Management Program, found an internship that had everything she wanted. She says, "My internship at Syracuse Hancock International Airport's Department of Aviation encompassed all of my interests: marketing, public relations, managerial relations and customer service. I was able to experience all of these interests as well as learn about the inner workings of an airport."

Emily's responsibilities included responding to complaints, attending meetings related to airport security, providing tours for local schools, and work related to the airport's website and Wikipedia page. One of her major tasks dealt with the airport's internal newsletter. "The newsletter had been on the back burner for several years and the commissioner asked me to take on the challenge," she says. "I designed the outline, created the titles and articles, and connected with numerous areas of the airport in order to generate a cohesive newsletter that involved everyone."

The internship helped Emily to understand how a business works, and that she could manage many different situations successfully. She says, "Internships help to get students out into the business world before they graduate. The work gives them a sense of what the real world is like. It does not matter if an internship experience was good or bad – either way it helps students to better understand what they will be facing upon graduation, and even helps to steer students in the right direction. It is better to find out in college that you do not enjoy a certain business or career rather than determining that after graduation."

Emily hopes to work for an advertising agency or a corporate marketing department, and complete a master's degree at the same time. "My goal right now is to find a marketing position in order to build on my skills, with hopes to climb the ladder within the department and organization."

Her Cazenovia College education has played a large role in Emily's success. "I absolutely loved the opportunities that a small class sized offered," she says. She most values "the one-on-one relationships a student can build with professors, and the family-like atmosphere the College provides. Cazenovia College was a great choice for me, and I believe the opportunities I have been given will help me in the future."
"My internship encompassed all of my interests: marketing, public relations, managerial relations and customer service."
